Biography
Angela Gonzales-Torres's campaign has drawn volunteers she has known since fourth grade, a former English teacher and people she once bartended with.1 Four generations of her family are rooted in Highland Park.1 She grew up in Section 8 housing, one of four daughters raised by a single mother after her father was deported.1
She attended community college before graduating from UCLA, where she studied Chicano studies and anthropology.1 Her current work helps people move from prison into university programs.2 She also advocates permanently affordable housing that brings students and seniors together with educational opportunities and supportive services.2
Her community roles have included president of the Highland Park Neighborhood Council, work in the Los Angeles mayor's office and service on Metro's Public Safety Advisory Committee.2 In describing her reentry work, she emphasizes helping students use education to move beyond repeated involvement with the prison system.1
Her platform supports Medicare for All, guaranteed housing vouchers, community land trusts and a federal wealth tax.3 She also backs abolishing ICE, citizenship pathways, free public college tuition and a basic income pilot program.3 Her proposals include an arms embargo on Israel and a pause on new data centers pending federal protections for workers, communities and utility customers.3 She faces fellow Democrat Jimmy Gomez in the district's general election.4
