Ashley Hinson
Many Iowans first knew Ashley Hinson from the evening news at KCRG in Cedar Rapids.
Biography
Away from Congress, Ashley Hinson plays violin at Antioch Christian Church and volunteers with local charities.1 She and her husband, Matt, are raising two sons in Marion.1 Before elected office, her workday was more likely to involve a television camera: she spent more than a decade reporting for KCRG in Cedar Rapids.1
Born in Des Moines, Hinson graduated from Valley High School and earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Southern California in 2004.2 Her broadcast journalism work covered subjects including eastern Iowa flooding and rising healthcare costs, and her official biography records two regional Emmy awards.1 She served in the Iowa House from 2017 through 2020 and entered Congress in January 2021.2
Hinson currently represents Iowa's 2nd District and serves on the Appropriations Committee and the House committee examining competition with China's Communist Party.1 In February 2026, she introduced the bipartisan After Hours Child Care Act with Democratic and Republican colleagues.3 The proposal would fund childcare options for parents working evenings, weekends or unpredictable schedules, including grants for providers to expand staffing and facilities.4
Her Senate platform promises permanent tax relief for working families, more affordable childcare, insurance claim transparency and limits on large investors buying single family homes.5 She also proposes temporarily suspending gas taxes and improving rural healthcare and maternal care.5 She faces Democrat Josh Turek on November 3 for the open seat of retiring Republican Joni Ernst.6
