Biography
Bill Huizenga remembers his father encouraging discussions about business and politics around the dinner table, an early introduction to subjects that became his working life.1 He grew up in Ottawa County, attended Holland Christian and Calvin College, and raised five children with his wife, Natalie.12
His business experience includes real estate and ownership in Huizenga Gravel, a family company now in its third generation.12 After serving in the Michigan House, he entered Congress in 2011 and has represented the current 4th District since January 2023, after previously representing the 2nd District.31
Huizenga is vice chair of the House Financial Services Committee and chairs the Foreign Affairs subcommittee covering South and Central Asia.1 He also helps lead the bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force and a fiscal forum focused on federal debt, and belongs to the congressional PFAS task force.1 His Great Lakes work includes advocating for the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.1
For another term, he emphasizes fewer agricultural regulations, expanded export markets and preserving revised federal wage rules that reduce labor costs for growers using temporary foreign workers.2 He argues those farmworker wage rules should remain even if a court challenge to them succeeds.2 He also favors broader ethanol sales and an energy strategy using multiple sources.2 His Democratic challenger, state Senator Sean McCann, previously served on the Kalamazoo City Commission and in the Michigan House.3
Record and controversies
Campaign spending review
The House Ethics Committee closed its review in June 2024 without imposing a sanction, while finding deficient campaign recordkeeping and improper contributions from congressional staff who were subsequently reimbursed.45 It found that the questioned trips had campaign purposes, and cited unclear guidance, cooperation and remedial measures in its decision.4 His office welcomed the closure and said it supported clearer guidance.5 June 2026 reporting identified further spending on snowmobile rentals and restaurant meals; his campaign said these were documented donor events compliant with the rules.6
