Brian Poindexter
Poindexter spends his working days in ironwork and has taught apprentices in the trade.
Biography
Brian Poindexter grew up in Cleveland as one of six children, with a union machinist father and a grandfather who worked in the auto industry.1 At 15, he worked evening machine shop shifts while playing football, wrestling and baseball in high school.1 He credits his union job with giving him more time at home with his daughters.2
His earlier jobs included factory work, furniture moving and truck driving before he joined the Ironworkers in 2007.1 He completed an apprenticeship while earning an associate degree in applied industrial technology at Cuyahoga Community College.1 His construction work has included the Lumen tower at Playhouse Square and infrastructure at NASA Glenn Research Center.1
Poindexter has served on Brook Park City Council since 2017.3 He also teaches Ironworkers apprentices and completed the union's five summer instructor certification program during his congressional campaign.4 He had spent five years teaching apprentices while completing that certification, combining his construction experience with classroom instruction.4
He says his first congressional cosponsorship would be the PRO Act, intended to strengthen workers' organizing and bargaining rights.2 He also supports raising the minimum wage, improving access to healthcare and investing in apprenticeships and community colleges.2 His campaign opposes blanket tariffs and the war in Iran, which he argues are increasing household costs.3 He faces Republican incumbent Max Miller for Ohio's 7th District seat.5
Record and controversies
1998 arrest in campaign advertising
During the 2026 campaign, Miller's campaign advertised a 1998 incident in which Poindexter was arrested on suspicion of possessing crack cocaine.6 Poindexter acknowledged the arrest but denied using hard drugs and said he was never charged with possessing them.6 This account concerns an arrest and a disputed campaign allegation; no drug conviction is reported.
