Brian Shaver

Brian Shaver is a social studies teacher at Fostoria Junior/Senior High School and the city's council president.¹ He grew up in Fostoria and lives on a small family farm with his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter.¹ Through a teaching grant, he visited sites in the Upper Midwest to study westward expansion and its effects on Native American communities.²

He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Bluffton University in 1999.³ His earlier work includes serving as director of parish and school at St. Wendelin, a Catholic school and parish in Fostoria.⁴ His public service has included a council seat as well as his current position presiding over the council.³⁴

Shaver won the Democratic congressional nomination in May 2026.⁵ In an interview quoted by Tiffin Ohio, he said teaching requires leaving his personal political and religious views outside the classroom.⁵ He presents that experience as preparation for representing people whose views differ from his own.⁵

His platform calls for congressional term limits, stricter campaign finance rules and restrictions on lawmakers' personal investments.⁶ He supports affordable rural housing, help for farmers and lower prescription costs.⁶ On education, he wants adequate federal school funding and opposes politicians micromanaging classrooms through excessive testing, censorship or rigid mandates.⁶ He faces Republican incumbent Bob Latta in November, with Libertarian Michael Veloff also on the ballot.⁷
