Biography
Eric Jones grew up in rural Maine in a family that relied on food stamps, Medicaid and disability benefits.1 His mother raised three sons, attended night school to become a nurse and worked two jobs in some years.1 He became the first in his family to attend college, going to Yale on a full scholarship.1 He and his wife, Rachel, met during his brief stint in New York; they now have two children and have lived in Napa since 2021.1
Jones moved to California in 2013 as an early hire at Dragoneer, an investment firm where he became a partner.2 His work included investing in companies and advising their leaders on strategy, hiring and fundraising.2 He describes work with Maven Clinic, Lyra Health and Duolingo, among other companies, and says he continues to serve on Maven's board without pay.2
His community work has included supporting car seats for families, programs for women veterans, youth theater and children's reading.1 He also founded the American Dream Institute, which he describes as working to protect and expand free speech online.1
Jones supports congressional term limits, a ban on lawmakers trading stocks and ending partisan gerrymandering.2 His published candidate statement calls for affordable child care, expanded Medicare benefits and help with utility bills.3 He faces fellow Democrat Mike Thompson in November.4
Record and controversies
Campaign volunteer at opponent's home
In December 2025, Patch reported that Capitol Police had questioned a Jones campaign volunteer after reports he parked outside Mike Thompson's home for hours.5 Thompson said the incident frightened his family and a neighbor.6 A campaign spokesperson dismissed it as a non event in Patch's December 2025 report.5 His current published response says he did not know of or approve the conduct, took responsibility, stopped it after learning about it and apologized publicly in the Napa Valley Register.7 A criminal charge or subsequent legal finding was not verified in this review.
