Biography

Jack Reed grew up in Cranston with a father who was a World War II veteran and school janitor, eventually becoming the school system's custodial supervisor.1 His mother, Mary, raised three children and encouraged their education, though she had not attended college herself.1 Reed and his wife, Julia Hart Reed, have a daughter, Emily.1

After West Point in 1971, Reed earned a public policy master's degree at Harvard and served as an Army infantry platoon leader and company commander in the 82nd Airborne Division.1 He also taught economics and international relations at West Point before leaving active duty in 1979, remaining in the Reserves until 1991.1 His later private legal practice included banking law and volunteer work for Providence's Amos House shelter.1

Reed served in Rhode Island's Senate and the U.S. House before entering the U.S. Senate in 1997.12 He authored the bipartisan Childhood Cancer STAR Act with Republican Shelley Moore Capito, enacted in 2018 to support research, cancer tracking and care for survivors.3 He is now the Armed Services Committee's ranking Democrat.4

His current agenda includes affordable housing investment, restoring enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits and increasing access to primary care.4 He also opposes the war in Iran and Trump's tariffs.4 He faces Republican Raymond McKay on November 3 while seeking a sixth term, with independent Michael Bahry also on the ballot.4
