Deaton grew up in poverty in Highland Park, Michigan, one of six children raised by a single mother.

Biography

John Deaton grew up in Highland Park, Michigan, in a family supported by his mother's work, food stamps and welfare.1 Now a father of three daughters, he described that upbringing in his 2023 memoir, Food Stamp Warrior.1 His later legal practice has concentrated on people with mesothelioma, cancer and asbestos exposure claims.1

While attending New England School of Law, Deaton joined the Marines and was commissioned in 1994, graduating from law school in 1995.1 He served as a judge advocate in Yuma, Arizona, working as defense counsel, chief prosecutor and a special assistant U.S. attorney.1 He was medically retired in 2002 after a noncombat injury.1

Deaton taught evidence and trial advocacy at the Naval Justice School and Naval War College before opening his own practice in 2006.1 He also participated as an amicus lawyer representing XRP holders' perspective in the Securities and Exchange Commission's litigation against Ripple.2

His campaign proposes breaking up vertically integrated health insurers, more transparent drug pricing and expanded telehealth.3 He supports nuclear power alongside renewable energy and favors congressional term limits.3 He also supports writing Roe v. Wade's protections into federal law.3 He faces Democratic Senator Ed Markey on November 3, offering voters a change of party and representation in the seat Markey has held since 2013.4
