Biography
John Joyce and his wife, Alice, are both doctors who returned to his hometown of Altoona to establish a dermatology practice and raise their three children.1 Their work caring for patients in central Pennsylvania spanned more than twenty five years.1 He has also volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen.1
A Bishop Guilfoyle High School graduate, he studied at Penn State Altoona and University Park, completing a biology degree in 1979.1 He earned his medical degree at Temple in 1983, then completed internal medicine and dermatology training at Johns Hopkins, finishing as chief dermatology resident.1 He subsequently worked with the Navy at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.1
Joyce entered Congress in 2019 and serves on Energy and Commerce.12 A melanoma survivor, he helped introduce the bipartisan SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act.3 Its reforms were incorporated into legislation enacted in November 2025, expanding the evidence and testing approaches FDA can consider when reviewing sunscreen ingredients.4 The law retained existing safety and effectiveness standards.4
He supports tighter Medicaid eligibility rules, including work requirements, as part of what he describes as protecting the program's integrity.5 His campaign emphasizes conservative economic policy, healthcare access and constitutional rights.1 Democrat Beth Farnham is challenging him again in November.6
