Biography
Johnny Garcia says he rents because buying a home remains out of reach for him.1 He grew up on San Antonio's West Side, raised by his mother in a working family.2 He remembers his grandmother's Social Security helping put food on the table, an experience he discusses when explaining his opposition to benefit cuts.1
After Memorial High School, Garcia worked construction while attending St. Philip's community college and joined the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at 21.3 He began in the jail, where he led the Inmate Worker Program, designed to provide job training and help people prepare for release.3 Within six months of moving to patrol, he was selected for the SWAT Crisis Negotiation Team, where he worked as a hostage negotiator.34
His duties subsequently included public information work, crisis communications and community engagement during a career spanning nearly two decades.5 He describes his politics as those of an old school Democrat focused on working families, affordable healthcare and public safety.3
His platform promises to oppose tariffs, strengthen healthcare assistance, expand apprenticeships and prohibit congressional stock trading.1 On immigration, he supports stronger border enforcement alongside work visas and pathways to citizenship, while calling for accountability standards for ICE.1 He faces Republican Carlos De La Cruz on November 3 for an open seat redrawn after incumbent Greg Casar moved his campaign to the 37th District.67
