Josh Shapiro

Shapiro met his wife, Lori, in ninth grade.

Biography

Josh Shapiro and his wife, Lori, were high school sweethearts and have four children.1 He grew up in Pennsylvania with a father who practiced pediatrics and served in the Navy and a mother who worked as an educator.1

Shapiro earned a law degree at Georgetown and worked on Capitol Hill before serving in the Pennsylvania House and on the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.2 As attorney general from 2017 to 2023, he oversaw an investigation of sexual abuse in Catholic dioceses, and his office helped negotiate opioid settlements.12

He became governor in January 2023 and soon faced the collapse of part of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia.1 His administration oversaw the emergency response, with traffic returning 12 days after the collapse.12 His administration also introduced automatic voter registration through PennDOT.1 His school budgets have also funded free breakfast for public school students, while his administration expanded property tax rebates and financing for school repairs.12

Against Republican Treasurer Stacy Garrity, Shapiro seeks a second term emphasizing education, housing, childcare and economic growth.2 He also wants to raise the minimum wage to $15, legalize adult marijuana use and establish lasting transit funding, proposals whose prospects depend on the legislature voters elect alongside the governor.2

Record and controversies

Aide complaint settlement

Shapiro's administration paid $295,000 in 2023 to settle an employee's sexual harassment and retaliation complaint against senior aide Mike Vereb, who resigned that September.3 The settlement included no admission of wrongdoing; scrutiny of Shapiro concerns his administration's response and the months Vereb remained employed after the complaint, rather than an allegation that Shapiro personally perpetrated the harassment.3 Shapiro defended a confidential investigation process intended to protect complainants, and his office said it took discrimination and harassment reports seriously.3
