Josh Turek's working life took him from Council Bluffs to basketball courts across Europe, where he played professionally for 18 years.1 Born with spina bifida, he underwent 21 surgeries by age 12, according to his biography.2 He now lives in Council Bluffs with his wife, Jarolin, an immigrant and U.S. citizen who works in healthcare.2
Turek graduated from Southwest Minnesota State in 2002, later earned an MBA and worked with patients and doctors at a mobility equipment company.2 He also volunteered with the Ryan Martin Foundation, which provides sports opportunities for children with disabilities.2 His four Paralympic appearances brought a London bronze and gold medals at Rio and Tokyo, whose Games took place in 2021.13
Now representing Iowa House District 20, Turek serves on its Health and Human Services Committee.4 His 2024 legislative work included proposals to ease Medicaid requirements for wheelchair repairs.56 The Legislature did not enact those repair bills; the state Medicaid agency subsequently removed prescription and doctor visit requirements through a policy change that July.6
His Senate platform promises stronger Medicaid and Affordable Care Act coverage, paid family leave, support for public schools and a congressional stock trading ban.7 He also proposes stronger border security alongside an earned pathway to citizenship.7 He faces Republican Ashley Hinson on November 3 for the seat retiring Senator Joni Ernst is leaving, in a race affecting control of the Senate.8
