Lee McInnis

McInnis grew up in Homewood in a family shaped by military service and organized labor.

Biography

Lee McInnis grew up in an Alabama family with military and union ties: his father was a Korean War veteran and civil engineer, while his mother and other relatives belonged to unions.1 His own working life began with six years in Army intelligence before a longer career in the defense intelligence community.1

His campaign biography describes 28 further years in the defense intelligence community, including overseas assignments and service in Afghanistan.1 His campaign biography identifies his final assignment as acting director of intelligence for NATO and American special operations there.1 After retiring from federal service, he taught communications and American government and earned a second master's degree, in history, at Auburn University.1

His congressional platform emphasizes rural healthcare access, education, affordability, fair taxation and veterans care.2 He calls for more hospital and medical services in underserved communities, including mental healthcare and emergency services.1 He also promises regular town halls and says he will not accept corporate PAC contributions.1

McInnis held an August town hall at the Opelika Public Library, discussing those issues with voters alongside other Democratic nominees.2 He says he would continue returning to Alabama to hear constituents directly if elected.2 He faces Republican incumbent Mike Rogers, whose congressional tenure began in 2003.23
