Marie Gluesenkamp Perez

Perez and her husband, Dean, built an auto repair and machine shop together before she entered Congress.

Biography

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and her husband, Dean, built both an auto repair business and their home themselves. They are raising their son in rural Skamania County.1 Her Washington roots stretch back five generations: a great great grandfather helped build the state Capitol, and her grandmother was born in a logging camp. Her father immigrated from Mexico.1

The couple grew their independent shop to six bays, and her campaign says they brought their child to work because daycare was too expensive.12 Those experiences inform her advocacy for more flexible childcare, apprenticeships and technical education, including allowing Pell Grants to support more job training.2

First elected to Congress in 2022, Gluesenkamp Perez has championed the right to repair vehicles, farm machinery and consumer equipment without being tied to manufacturers' repair services.1 Her campaign also points to work securing federal funding for replacement of the Interstate 5 bridge and advocating simpler Small Business Administration loan applications.2

She supports abortion rights, stronger border security, addiction treatment and more resources to retain police officers and firefighters. She also wants to prohibit members of Congress from trading individual stocks.2 In November, she faces Republican state Senate leader John Braun, a Navy veteran and emergency vehicle manufacturer whose campaign emphasizes costs, manufacturing and national defense.3
