Maxine Waters
Waters grew up in St. Louis as the fifth of 13 children raised by a single mother.
Biography
She started working at 13, later taking jobs in Los Angeles garment factories and at the telephone company. She became a Head Start teacher and organizer before entering politics. Married to former ambassador Sidney Williams, she has two children and two grandchildren.
