Biography
Sean McCann describes himself as both the son of a public school teacher and a public school parent, connections that appear prominently in his education proposals.1 He and his wife, Priscilla Lambert, have two children, Alexander and Lauren, and his adult life has been rooted in Kalamazoo since his years at Western Michigan University.2
McCann earned his political science degree in 1993.2 Before the Legislature, he ran the Vine Neighborhood Association for more than six years and worked in fundraising for the local American Red Cross for nearly eight.2 He also spent a decade on the Kalamazoo City Commission, then served in the Michigan House and Senate.23
One specific legislative result was his sponsorship of Senate Bill 14, signed in 2023, which removed restrictions on state agencies adopting rules stronger than federal standards.45 For Congress, he proposes extending Affordable Care Act tax credits, reducing prescription costs, expanding access to medical care and protecting reproductive rights.1 His energy proposals include solar, wind and nuclear generation, and he supports legislation allowing farmers greater freedom to repair their own equipment.1
Facing legislative term limits, McCann is challenging Republican Bill Huizenga in a district that includes Kalamazoo, lakeshore communities and parts of six counties.3 The race puts his state and local government experience against an incumbent in Congress since 2011, with health costs, regulation and the regional economy among their competing priorities.316
