Aaron Gies

Away from his academic work, Aaron Gies gardens, cycles and helps at his wife Katie's veterinary clinic.¹ He also sings as a parish cantor, and the couple have a son.¹²

His father ran a contracting business and his mother worked as a school secretary; his own earlier jobs included waiting tables, bookkeeping and work on a nonprofit farm.³ His graduate education includes master's degrees in Christian thought and medieval studies, followed by a 2018 doctorate in historical and systematic theology at the Catholic University of America.¹

Gies joined St. Bonaventure University as a postdoctoral researcher in 2019 and became a regular department member in 2021.¹ He is now an associate professor of theology and Franciscan studies and an associate editor of the journal Franciscan Studies.¹ His scholarship includes translating the medieval theologian Alexander of Hales, with an English translation and introduction published in 2018.¹ His research has covered Latin manuscripts and early Franciscan theology, including work on a critical edition of Alexander of Hales' commentary on the Gospel of John.¹

Gies challenges Republican incumbent Nick Langworthy, campaigning on affordability, investment in healthcare and opposition to the war with Iran.⁴ He also supports universal healthcare, affordable housing, stronger public schools, abortion rights and stronger workers' bargaining power.³
