Biography

Adelita Grijalva grew up in Tucson joining her parents at marches for farmworkers and migrant rights, sometimes while she was still being pushed in a stroller.1 She lives in Tucson with her husband, Sol, and their three children, in the community where her family has long been involved in public life.2

After graduating from Pueblo High School and the University of Arizona, Grijalva worked at Pima County Teen Court for more than 25 years.2 The program uses restorative juvenile diversion, and she has described how that work brought her into contact with the effects of school discipline on young people's lives.1

She joined the Tucson Unified school board in 2002 and later served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors, becoming its first Latina chair.2 Her congressional biography highlights work expanding preschool access, investing in affordable housing and protecting open space before she won the 2025 special election for her late father Raúl's House seat.23

Grijalva faces Republican Daniel Butierez again in the Seventh District.3 She supports Medicare for All, more affordable housing and child care assistance, and replacing ICE with a different approach to immigration enforcement that protects civil liberties and expands the capacity of immigration courts.3
