Adrian Smith

Smith grew up in Gering, left for college and returned home to begin his career.

Biography

Adrian Smith traces his early skepticism of government regulation to running a snow cone stand as a child in Gering.1 His family's Nebraska roots stretch back six generations, and he credits his grandfather with introducing him to politics.1 He and his wife, Andrea, live in Gering with their two children.1

Smith graduated from Gering High School and earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1993.2 Before Congress, his work included business ownership, education coordination and real estate.21 He served on Gering's City Council from 1994 through 1998 and then spent eight years in Nebraska's Legislature.2

Smith entered the House in January 2007 and now chairs the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee.21 His office highlights committee work on the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and expanding markets through trade agreements, including the agreement with Mexico and Canada.1 His healthcare priorities include telehealth access and lower prescription costs.1

He faces Democrat Becky Stille and three other candidates in Nebraska's Third District.3 Smith favors stronger border enforcement, more domestic energy production and restrictions on abortion.1 He also calls for regular federal budgets and permanent Trump Accounts support for newborns.4 The current $1,000 federal contribution pilot covers eligible children born in 2025 through 2028.5
