Amish Shah
Shah grew up in Chicago, the son of engineering students who immigrated from India.
Biography
Amish Shah has three adopted cats, including one called Cousin Oliver, and spends some of his time away from medicine playing basketball and flying small airplanes.1 He grew up in Chicago, the son of engineering students who immigrated from India, and attended Catholic schools before heading to Northwestern University.2
Shah earned his economics and medical degrees at Northwestern, followed by a public health master's degree at the University of California, Berkeley.2 His medical career has included emergency departments, teaching at Mount Sinai and leading the New York Jets' airway management team, along with sports medicine training at the University of Arizona.2
Outside the hospital, he founded the Arizona Vegetarian Food Festival to promote healthier eating.2 He won three state House elections, serving five years and concentrating on public health, teacher pay and small businesses, according to his campaign's account of his legislative work.1
His congressional priorities include lowering prescription costs, protecting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and preserving abortion access and patients' authority over medical decisions.1 He faces Republican Jay Feely for an open House seat that could help determine the chamber's majority, a matchup pairing a former Jets sideline doctor with a former Jets kicker.34
