Biography
Connie Chan arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong at thirteen with her mother and younger brother, settling into a Chinatown apartment.1 Her mother took City College classes and became a claims processor at Chinese Hospital.1 Chan now lives in the Richmond District with her partner, Ed, a firefighter, their son and Australian shepherd, Urso.1
After Galileo High School and a bachelor's degree at UC Davis, Chan began as a volunteer Chinese interpreter for attorneys providing free legal help.1 Community organizing and legislative work followed, including service for Supervisor Sophie Maxwell and District Attorney Kamala Harris.1
Chan was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2020 and has chaired its budget committee since 2023.1 Her budget work includes immigration legal services proposals and reserves intended to protect city programs from federal funding cuts.1
Her congressional campaign emphasizes housing working families can afford and lower healthcare, education and childcare costs.2 She also supports labor organizing and stronger worker protections, framing her agenda around public services and economic opportunity.3 Chan and state Senator Scott Wiener, both Democrats, are the November finalists for the seat Nancy Pelosi is leaving.2
Record and controversies
2024 supervisor campaign audit
A July 2025 city ethics audit of Chan's 2024 supervisor campaign found unsupported occupation information for 32 of 110 sampled contributions, minor reporting errors and two apparently prohibited donations totaling $350 from people connected to city contractors.4 The treasurer cited existing donor records and ActBlue's combined retired or unemployed option, and said she believed the two personal donations were permitted under prior guidance.4 Auditors acknowledged the platform's category problem but maintained that required supporting records were missing; they concluded the committee substantially complied except for the listed findings.4 The report said it would be forwarded to the enforcement division; subsequent action was not verified here.4
