Biography

Deborah Ross grew up with an Air Force veteran for a father and an early childhood educator for a mother.1 Law school at the University of North Carolina brought her to the state, and she now lives in Raleigh with her husband, Steve Wrinn, and their dog, Wylie.2

Before Congress, she practiced constitutional, infrastructure and renewable energy law and led North Carolina's American Civil Liberties Union beginning in 1994.3 Her civil rights work included juvenile justice reform and efforts to collect information about racial profiling in traffic stops.3 Elected to the state House in 2002, she served as majority and minority whip and chaired its Judiciary, Ethics and Election Laws committees.1

She entered Congress in 2021 and serves on the Judiciary and Science, Space and Technology committees.1 Ross helped lead the House legislation behind the Courthouse Ethics and Transparency Act, enacted in May 2022.4 The law requires public online access to federal judges' financial disclosures and periodic reporting of securities transactions.5

Her priorities include lowering prescription costs, protecting Social Security and improving transportation infrastructure.2 She also proposes stronger protections for young athletes and children of long term visa holders facing the loss of their legal immigration status.1 She faces Republican Eugene Douglass.6
