Eugene Douglass
Douglass's classrooms have ranged from North Carolina to Kazakhstan and Iraq.
Biography
Eugene Douglass has spent more than 30 years teaching chemistry, including four years in Kazakhstan and one in Iraq.1 He grew up in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and describes himself as a retired chemistry professor.2
His education took him from a chemistry and mathematics degree at The King's College in New York to graduate study in polymer science at the University of Connecticut.3 He also earned a divinity degree at Bethel Theological Seminary in 1989 and a doctorate in fiber and polymer science at North Carolina State in 2010.3
Douglass worked in industrial chemistry before teaching and came to UNC Pembroke in 2005.3 A 2013 research paper identifies him as a Nazarbayev University chemistry faculty member and a coauthor studying cellulose and soy protein membranes.4 His earlier campaigns included Senate races in Hawaii and House bids in New Hampshire and North Carolina.3
He advocates additional nuclear and natural gas power generation and says data centers should pay for the power and transmission infrastructure they need.3 He would refocus National Science Foundation grants on the hard sciences, ending funding for diversity initiatives and what he describes as political advocacy.3 He also emphasizes careful federal spending and supports balanced budget amendments.1 He faces Democratic incumbent Deborah Ross.5
