Biography

Greg Stanton grew up in west Phoenix with four siblings and a father who rode the bus to his job selling shoes.1 His parents organized donations through their church, and the family living room filled with food, clothes, diapers and other supplies headed to neighbors and local organizations.1

At Marquette University, Stanton helped develop a YMCA program combining homework help and basketball, and worked at the Milwaukee Urban League.1 After college and law school, he returned to Phoenix to practice law and became involved in community organizations before joining the City Council.1

He served as Phoenix mayor from 2012 to 2018, then moved into Congress in 2019.23 His current assignments include the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Foreign Affairs Committee and the select committee focused on competition with China.2 His office identifies water resources, infrastructure and opportunities for Valley businesses as central priorities.2

Stanton is seeking reelection against Republican physician Zuhdi Jasser.4 In their campaign discussion, Stanton defended Affordable Care Act protections for patients with existing medical conditions and argued that tariffs were worsening the cost of living, making health coverage and household expenses prominent differences in the race.4
