Jeremy Moss

As a first grader, Jeremy Moss could name every president in order.

Biography

Jeremy Moss remembers being the first grader who could name every president in order.1 Evenings at home included watching Peter Jennings with his family.1 Born in Detroit, he grew up in Southfield with an older sister.1 His great grandparents fled antisemitic persecution in Eastern Europe around the turn of the twentieth century.1

Moss earned a journalism degree at Michigan State in 2008.1 As a student, he joined humanitarian projects in New Orleans, South America and South Africa, including rebuilding and support for children affected by HIV/AIDS.2 His early government work included serving Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence and working as a district director for state Representative Rudy Hobbs.1

Voters elected him to Southfield's council in 2011, when he was twenty four.1 He won a Michigan House seat in 2014 and a state Senate seat in 2018, and now serves as Senate president pro tempore.1 He helped lead the 2023 legislation placing explicit protections for sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.3

The Democratic nominee in Michigan's 11th District supports a public health insurance option while preserving employer and union coverage.4 He backs early childhood education, stronger unions, more affordable housing and ending tariffs that raise prices.4 On immigration, he calls for dismantling ICE and creating citizenship pathways for people protected under DACA.4

Record and controversies

Disputed audio

An undated recording of unknown origin circulated online purporting to capture Moss saying his campaign existed to support Israel and that Jews should prioritize Israel over the United States.5 Moss denied making the attributed statements, called the recording manipulated and said it exploited antisemitic dual loyalty tropes.5 Experts found no AI or manipulation evidence but could not establish the speaker or context.6
