Biography

Jim Himes spent his early childhood in Peru and Colombia, speaking Spanish and English while his father worked for the Ford Foundation and UNICEF.1 Born in Lima to American parents, he moved to the United States with his mother and sisters at ten and attended public high school in New Jersey.1

He graduated from Harvard and studied Latin America at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, including research in El Salvador.1 His first career was at Goldman Sachs, where he became a vice president during 12 years with the firm.1 He later led Enterprise Community Partners' New York City operation, whose work financed affordable housing.1

Before Congress, Himes chaired the Greenwich Housing Authority and served on the town's finance board.1 He won his House seat in 2008 and is now the Intelligence Committee's senior Democrat, while also serving on Financial Services.2 He points to infrastructure law funding for Norwalk's WALK Bridge replacement as an example of investment benefiting Amtrak and Metro North passengers.2

Himes names housing, infrastructure and living costs among his current priorities and supports additional measures to increase housing construction.2 He faces Republican Michael Goldstein in the November election.3 If reelected with a Democratic House majority, he hopes to chair Intelligence and expand oversight of the administration and intelligence contractors.2
