Biography
Josh Green was raised in Pittsburgh and remains a Steelers fan while serving as Hawaii's governor.1 He met Jaime Ushiroda in 2005, and they married the following year.2 They have two children, Maia and Sam, and enjoy family walks, games and visits to farmers markets.1
Green studied biology and anthropology at Swarthmore College and earned his medical degree at Penn State.1 After training in family medicine, he joined the National Health Service Corps and worked in the rural Ka‘ū community on Hawaii Island.1 He continued practicing emergency medicine on the island during his years in the Legislature.1
He served in the Hawaii House from 2004 to 2008 and the Senate from 2008 to 2018, then became lieutenant governor.1 In that office, he was the liaison between state government and healthcare providers during the COVID pandemic.1 Elected governor in 2022, he signed 2024 income tax legislation raising standard deductions and setting out staged changes to tax brackets.23
For another term, Green proposes protecting middle class tax relief, building affordable homes, expanding kauhale housing villages for people experiencing homelessness and reducing electricity costs.4 He says housing policy should allow the state's children to remain in Hawaii rather than being priced out.4 He faces Republican contractor Gary Cordery, who is challenging his bid for a second term.5
