Biography
Kelly Thompson is married to her high school sweetheart and has six children and twelve grandchildren.1 She lives in North Webster and shares ownership of Thompson Concrete, a contracting business.2 The company's service area extends across northern Indiana, southern Michigan and western Ohio.1
She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Central Florida.1 She also founded a nonprofit focused on helping young people, with goals that included suicide prevention, academic support and safer homes through work with parents.1 She says that work helped draw her into electoral politics.1
Thompson describes herself as someone who voted Republican until 2016.1 She ran unsuccessfully for Indiana House District 22 as a Democrat in 2020 and is now the Democratic challenger to Republican Congressman Marlin Stutzman.2 Her healthcare platform calls for Medicare for All, with national coverage financed according to ability to pay and no premiums, deductibles or copayments.3
Her farmland plan would exempt qualifying transfers to individuals or family members from federal estate tax and limit purchases by foreign governments and investment businesses outside agriculture.4 She also proposes assistance for homeowners facing climate related insurance increases and a resilience fund financed by major fossil fuel companies.5 That plan includes grants and financing for home protection against storms, floods and other disasters.5
