Biography
Kevin Martin started cutting grass at nine because he wanted to buy his own bicycle.1 He grew up with a brother in a small house with two bedrooms.1 His father spent 42 years at Atlanta Gaslight, while his mother spent 35 years at BellSouth and became a supervisor.1
Martin describes himself as a fifth generation Cobb County native.1 His grandfather, the son of a sharecropper, came to Atlanta through the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.1 He later built a business, hired people from his community and kept a garden that neighbors could work when they needed food.1
A Georgia Tech graduate, Martin has spent thirty years working as a controller.21 His campaign highlights a review of unexplained payroll increases as an example of his financial oversight work.1 He wants Congress to audit federal programs and require agencies to justify spending through regular budgets.1
Martin proposes expanding federal student aid for technical training and certification programs, alongside stronger support for apprenticeships.2 He wants Medicare and Medicaid payments to better reflect the costs of rural and community hospital care.3 He also favors antitrust scrutiny of hospital consolidation and arrangements connecting smaller hospitals with larger centers for complex care.3 His opponent is Democrat Lucy McBath.4
