Lauren Jewett
Jewett's grandmother taught special education and led her teachers' union.
Biography
Lauren Jewett's grandmother was a special education teacher and teachers union president in Lackawanna, New York.1 Jewett credits her family's experiences with disability with helping shape her interest in disability rights.1 She now lives in Metairie and has built her own career in Louisiana classrooms.1
Jewett earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science at the University of Rochester and a master's in English literature at Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English.1 She began teaching in St. John the Baptist Parish in 2009 and has taught students with disabilities from kindergarten through sixth grade.1 A National Board Certified teacher, she was also a founding staff member at The Leah Chase School.1
She served on United Teachers of New Orleans' executive council from 2013 through 2022, including five years as its political education committee vice president.1 Her community work includes six years on the New Orleans Track Club board, with service as secretary and president.1 She has also volunteered with Louisiana Books 2 Prisoners, sending free books to incarcerated readers.1 In 2022, the American Consortium for Equity in Education recognized her work in special education.2
Jewett faces Republicans Steve Scalise and Randall Arrington and candidate E. Liddy Glass, who has no party affiliation, in the November open primary.3 Her platform supports Medicare for All, full federal special education funding and abolishing ICE.3
