Madeleine Dean
Dean grew up in Glenside as the youngest of seven children.
Biography
Madeleine Dean grew up in Glenside with five older brothers and one older sister, and says her political education began around the family dinner table.1 At 18, she won election to a local committee post.1 She and her husband, PJ Cunnane, raised three sons and now have seven grandchildren.1
She graduated from La Salle University and earned her law degree at Widener's Delaware Law School.1 She opened a small Glenside law practice before changing careers to teach writing and ethics at La Salle from 2001 to 2011.1 She also served as an Abington Township commissioner and in the Pennsylvania House.1
Her 2021 memoir, Under Our Roof, written with her adult son Harry Cunnane, tells their family's story of his opioid addiction and recovery through both a mother's and a son's perspective.2 She was elected to Congress in 2018 and now serves on the Appropriations and Foreign Affairs committees.1
In September 2026 she reintroduced the MORE Savings Act, proposing to remove patient cost sharing for covered opioid treatment and recovery services under private insurance and Medicaid, alongside a Medicare pilot.3 Her House biography identifies stopping gun violence and guaranteeing healthcare for all as key priorities.1 She seeks another term against Republican appraiser Aurora Stuski in the Fourth District.45
Record and controversies
Campaign finance complaint dismissed
A 2020 complaint alleged that Dean's state committee improperly paid about $17,000 in federal campaign expenses.6 Her response documented state campaign purposes for most spending but acknowledged web hosting and mailbox allocation errors, reporting a $254.79 payment to the Treasury.6 The FEC dismissed the complaint and closed the file in 2021 under prosecutorial discretion, considering the small amount, documentation and corrective action.7 This was a discretionary dismissal, rather than a finding that every disputed payment was proper.6
