Mark Pocan

Biography

Mark Pocan started delivering campaign leaflets at eight for his father, a Kenosha alderman.1 He later moved to Madison for college, earned a journalism degree and opened a union printing company.1 Pocan and his husband, Phil, married in Canada in 2006 and live in Wisconsin's Town of Vermont.1

His college Democratic organizing preceded election to the Dane County Board, where he served three terms.1 In 1998, he won the Wisconsin Assembly seat Tammy Baldwin vacated when she went to Congress.1 After fourteen years in the Assembly, he succeeded Baldwin again, entering the U.S. House in 2013 as she moved to the Senate.1

Pocan now serves on the Appropriations Committee, including its subcommittees handling labor, education, health and human services, financial services and general government.2 He also cochairs the congressional Equality and Labor caucuses and is a former chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.2

His policy priorities include stronger organizing and pension rights, clean energy investment, higher wages and protecting Medicare and Social Security.1 He also supports public education and assistance that helps people through illness, unemployment and disability.1 The Democrat is the only candidate printed for Wisconsin's 2nd District on the official November listing, with no Republican nominee in that field.3
