Biography
Matt Dunlap's working life included washing dishes, tending bar and trapping fur before it included state government.1 Raised on a farm near Bar Harbor, he now lives in Old Town with his wife, Michelle Dunphy, and they have one daughter.1 His community work includes helping establish the Maine Youth Fish and Game Association and serving his Episcopal church.1
A University of Maine graduate with bachelor's and master's degrees, Dunlap served in the Maine House, spent multiple terms as secretary of state and is now state auditor.2 He also led the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine and has defended gun ownership alongside conservation and public land protections.23
In 2017, while serving on President Trump's election integrity commission, he sued to obtain its working documents; a federal court ruled that he was entitled to records needed to participate as a commissioner.4 In this campaign, his central health proposal is Medicare for All, alongside reversing Medicaid reductions and strengthening Social Security's financing by lifting the payroll tax cap.2
Dunlap also advocates universal child care, affordable housing investment, stronger labor protections and an end to broad tariffs he says raise household costs.5 He faces former Republican governor Paul LePage for the seat Jared Golden is leaving, making the contest a choice between two familiar Maine public officials and a target for both parties seeking control of the House.3
