Morgan Griffith

Griffith grew up in Salem with a schoolteacher for a mother.

Biography

Morgan Griffith and his wife, Hilary, have three children, and his early career was rooted in a Southwest Virginia law practice.1 He graduated from Salem's Andrew Lewis High School and Emory & Henry College, then studied law at Washington and Lee before returning to the region.1

Griffith practiced law for nearly three decades while building a legislative career in Richmond.1 He represented the 8th District in Virginia's House of Delegates from 1994 to 2011.1 In 2000, he became the first Republican to hold the chamber's majority leader position.1

Elected to Congress in 2010, Griffith serves on Energy and Commerce and currently chairs its Health Subcommittee.1 He also serves on House Administration and is vice chairman of Rules, which helps determine how legislation reaches the House floor and is debated.1

One of his current priorities is federal regulation of THC products, including testing, clear adult labeling and limits on potency.2 He favors creating enforceable standards for products already on the market rather than relying solely on prohibition.2 Democrat Joy Powers, a Bedford cattle farmer and small business owner, is challenging him in November in a district covering much of Southwest Virginia.2
