Ned Lamont

Lamont started a weekly newspaper after college, then built a cable television business serving college campuses.

Biography

Ned Lamont started a local weekly newspaper after college, covering town meetings in a community recovering from the loss of its largest employer.1 He and his wife, Annie, married in 1983 and have three children, Emily, Lindsay and Teddy.1

Lamont earned a sociology degree at Harvard and an MBA at Yale before building a telecommunications business serving college campuses.1 He also volunteered at Harding High School in Bridgeport, teaching students about small businesses, bringing businesspeople into the classroom and helping students find internships.1

His public service included Greenwich's Board of Selectmen and Board of Estimate and Taxation, plus four years chairing the State Investment Advisory Council.1 He became governor in 2019 and began his second term in 2023.1 In 2019, he signed the law establishing paid family and medical leave, providing benefits for eligible workers taking time for their health, a new child or a sick family member.2 The law generally provides up to 12 weeks of paid leave benefits.2

Lamont seeks a third term against Republican state Senator Ryan Fazio, emphasizing expanded healthcare access, more housing and stronger accountability for utilities.3 Their contest puts different approaches to taxes and electricity costs before voters, alongside disagreements about the state's cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.4

Record and controversies

Wetlands tree removal fine

Greenwich's wetlands agency fined the Lamonts and neighboring property owners $1,000 each in June 2024 after unpermitted tree removal.5 Lamont accepted partial responsibility, and his attorney said the family would fund restoration on the affected properties.5 This was municipal environmental enforcement and restoration, rather than a criminal conviction.5
