Paul Gosar

Gosar spent 25 years as a dentist before his first campaign took him to Congress in 2011.

Biography

Paul Gosar spent 25 years running a dental practice in Flagstaff before his first campaign for Congress.1 He entered the House after a working life spent treating patients and operating a small business, rather than holding an earlier elected office, and continues to use his dental credentials in his congressional title.1

Gosar was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming, graduated from Pinedale High School and went to Creighton University in Nebraska.2 He earned his bachelor's degree there in 1981 and his dental degree in 1985, before making Arizona the setting for his professional practice and subsequent political career.21

First elected in 2010, he has served in Congress since January 2011 and previously chaired the Congressional Western Caucus.21 His current work includes the Natural Resources and Oversight committees, and he chairs the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.1

His stated priorities include tighter immigration enforcement, border security, spending reductions and greater scrutiny of federal agencies, alongside a smaller federal role and more individual liberty.1 Gosar faces Democratic Navy veteran Dani Sterbinsky in the Ninth District, with William Perry and G. Seville Hatch also running as independent write in candidates.3

Record and controversies

House censure

On November 17, 2021, the House voted 223 to 207 to censure Gosar and remove him from two committees after he posted an edited video depicting himself killing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attacking President Joe Biden.45 Gosar said the animation symbolized an immigration policy dispute and denied advocating violence.6 He now serves on both committees again.1
