Peter Williams

Williams and his college sweetheart, Alfreda, raised four children while building a life in Louisiana.

Biography

Peter Williams married his college sweetheart, Alfreda Rodney Williams; their family includes four grown children and six grandchildren.1 He lives in Lettsworth, a rural community in northern Pointe Coupee Parish, where he and his family operate Resource One Nursery, a tree farm and specialty crop business.1

Williams graduated in 1980 from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.1 He taught physical education in public schools and worked in Lafayette's parks and recreation department, describing himself as the first recreation director at its Martin Luther King center.2 He established the family nursery in 1999 after that work in education and recreation.1

He describes growing up under segregation and living through integration as experience he would bring to bridging racial and political divisions.1 An Apostolic Christian, he opposes abortion and same sex marriage, supports gun ownership rights and says those convictions coexist with compassion for people who rely on public safety net programs.1 He also advocates small business development in underserved communities, including designated Opportunity Zones.1

He promises accessible leadership and cooperation across party lines.1 Williams is the Republican in a five candidate field that includes Democratic incumbent Troy Carter, Libertarian Lisa Ballay and candidates Walter “Rocky” Beach and Renada “Honey” Collins, who have no party affiliation.3 All compete in the November open primary, with a December runoff possible under the state's House election rules.4
