Biography
Robert Murray calls himself a family man and a bonus dad to his partner's son, and says he left his corporate career because he wanted a family.1 He grew up in Chesterfield in a family of university professors and musicians.2
Murray started an information technology company on Richmond's south side after high school and built a business serving the Mid Atlantic region.2 After attending several Virginia colleges, he graduated from William & Mary, studied in Germany and completed an MBA at Emory.2 His later IBM career included federal technology consulting and North American chief information officer advisory leadership.2
He says his work has taken him to fifteen countries and involved technology projects for organizations ranging from governments to a local church.1 Now retired from business and living in downtown Richmond, he describes family court reform and civil rights advocacy as his route into politics.1
Murray proposes easing housing regulations, shifting taxes away from individuals toward corporations and overseas suppliers, and improving governance of emerging technologies.1 He favors disease prevention and nutrition as healthcare priorities and wants less spending on overseas conflicts.1 Murray faces Democratic incumbent Jennifer McClellan and independent Joan Bell in November.3
