Shomari Figures

Figures grew up in Mobile, attending his grandfather's church and watching both parents serve in the Alabama Senate.

Biography

Shomari Figures and his wife, Kalisha, a former schoolteacher, have four children: Micah, Novah, Zorah and Erzah.1 He grew up in Alabama around his grandfather's church and parents whose working lives included both law and elected office: his father, Michael, was a civil rights attorney and state senator, and his mother, Vivian, also became a state senator.1

After Mobile's LeFlore High School, Figures earned undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Alabama, finishing law school in 2010.2 His early career included a federal court clerkship, Barack Obama's 2012 campaign, White House personnel work and service on Senator Sherrod Brown's staff.2 He later became deputy chief of staff and counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland.1

Figures entered Congress in January 2025 and serves on its Agriculture and Transportation and Infrastructure committees.2 He introduced the Rural Hospital Stabilization Act, proposing grants of up to $5 million per hospital for operating costs, facilities and equipment.3 In July 2026, he introduced a separate proposal directing $15 billion toward assistance for qualifying farmers suffering revenue losses.4

For reelection, Figures emphasizes accessible healthcare, stronger schools, employment and investment in local infrastructure, presenting hospital access and farm finances as priorities for the district.1 His November 3 opponent is Republican Rhett Marques, in a district whose boundaries changed again for 2026 following the Supreme Court's Louisiana redistricting decision.5
