Terri Pickens

Pickens grew up in Pocatello, left for college and came home to Idaho for law school.

Biography

Terri Pickens and her two children, Maya and Parker, share an appetite for camping, fishing, rafting and skiing in Idaho.1 A fourth generation Idahoan, she grew up in Pocatello and graduated from Highland High School before leaving the state for college.1

Pickens earned a political science degree from the University of Southern California in 1994, then returned for law school at the University of Idaho, graduating in 1998.1 Her early legal work included serving as a public defender in Nez Perce County before moving to Boise in 1999 to become a trial attorney.1

She founded Pickens Law in 2008 and handles disputes involving real estate, construction and commercial matters.1 Her work has included appeals before the Idaho Supreme Court and Ninth Circuit, while her volunteering includes advocating for children in protective cases through the CASA program.1 She was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 2022, losing to Scott Bedke.2

Against Republican Governor Brad Little in a field that also includes independent John Stegner, Pickens proposes a different direction on education funding and state spending.3 She wants to repeal the private education tax credit, remove the food tax and address housing costs, while directing more attention to public schools, rural hospitals and wildfire preparedness.3

Record and controversies

Ballot measure ad lawsuit

Opponents of Idaho's abortion rights ballot measure sued over advertising purchased through Pickens' campaign, alleging disclosure and financing violations.4 The Secretary of State's office had reviewed the transactions and found no campaign finance reporting violation, while clarifying that this was an initial review rather than a full investigation.4 The Democratic Party called the lawsuit frivolous and the purchase lawful.4 The lawsuit is a separate allegation, rather than a court finding overturning that initial review.4
