Biography
Vince George grew up in South Charleston with four siblings, a salesman father and a mother who managed the household.1 His parents had temporarily left West Virginia for work before returning when he was young.1 He attended local public schools and later studied political science and commerce at West Virginia University.1 He has two children and three grandchildren, and lists swimming, running and reading among his interests.2
George's public service included voter registration work for the Kanawha County Clerk and a staff role in the state legislature.3 Much of his career involved helping people determine eligibility and apply for SNAP, Medicaid and cash assistance.1 He also helped recruit doctors to treat Medicaid patients in rural communities.1
His teaching experience includes Fairmont State University, Shepherd University and Martinsburg High School.3 He worked with the West Virginia Environmental Council and Citizen Action Group on air, water and mining issues, and managed Denise Giardina's campaign for governor.1
George supports doubling the federal minimum wage, protecting Social Security and SNAP, reversing healthcare funding cuts and making childcare and rural transportation more accessible.4 He also advocates stronger mine safety, support for miners with black lung and local authority over data center development.4 He faces Republican incumbent Carol Miller and Constitution Party candidate Belinda Fox-Spencer in November.2
